Deborah
Rue Flower represents grace and clear vision. The flowers were constructed of a combination of Czech glass beads and plastic payettes that keep the weight of the embellishments to a minimum. The colors of the dress and her accessories were inspired by the Palm of Deborah.
Why I chose her
I chose Deborah because she was a prophet and a judge who served as the ultimate arbiter in her community. She would sit under the Palm of Deborah where people would come to her in search of wisdom and justice. My favorite part of her story is when she issues God’s command to attack the Canaanite army to Barak, a leader in ancient Israel, and he responds by saying he will only go if Deborah accompanies him. Deborah replies, “I will go with you. But you will not receive honor in this venture, for the Lord’s victory over Sisera [the Canaanite commander] will be at the hands of a woman.” He agrees to her terms. Not only does she lead the army into battle but she receives full credit for Israel’s victory in a book printed billions of times.
